Judging a book by its cover: how to photograph objects for e-commerce or catalogues in a professional way

Photographing objects might seem like a simple task, especially since they don’t move – as people do – and therefore there’s more time to adjust the camera settings and test some shots. There is, however, a huge difference between photos of objects and professional photos of objects, if you want to photograph objects in a professional way and in the right location!
In particular, if you want to photograph objects for e-commerce or photograph objects for catalogues there are a few tricks that will let your picture do justice to the product you want to sell.

Discover how to photograph objects in a professional way

First of all, remember to thoroughly clean the object: traces of dust, streaks or fingerprints are very noticeable, especially if you are taking a close-up of an object with a very narrow field.

Another important thing to keep in mind when photographing objects in a professional way is the setting. If you want to photograph objects for e-commerce or photograph objects for catalogues, know that to make the product stand out it should be set against a neutral background. If you don’t have a photo studio available, you can always easily make one at home. Start with a few sheets of white cardboard and some pegs. Now, rest the cardboard on a wide, flat surface, such as a table. Make sure you have some sort of support (e.g. a string or a shelf) positioned parallel just a few centimeters above the table, and use the pegs to fasten the two sides of the cardboard. Thanks to this technique you will create a smooth, tilted surface that will be the backdrop of your product and will help you obtain the depth and the right shadows for the photo.

Whether you’re using a professional camera or simply your smartphone, use a tripod: this will give you more time to adjust the camera settings, the position of the object and its exposure to the available light.
